Manistee - Robert Nathan Lippert died September 25, 2016 surrounded by family at Munson Hospice House. He was born in Evart, Michigan, October 21, 1920
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Lee (Crawford) Lippert; his parents, George Sr. and Dency (Hewitt) Lippert of Evart MI; brothers Floyd (Mary) Lippert of Nokomis, FL; George Jr. (Ellen) Lippert of Pontiac, MI; Willis (Helen) Lippert of Seattle, WA; infant brother Lyle Lippert and sister, Mildred (Howard) White of Detroit.
Bob graduated from Evart High School in 1938 working first in highway construction and at Pontiac Motor Company before enlisting in the Navy where he was assigned to the Air Department of the U.S.S. Hornet CV12 aircraft carrier at Norfolk, Virginia. While on the Hornet, he worked on the Norden Bombsite, a critical wartime instrument.
Bob married Betty Lee Crawford of Mt. Pleasant, MI on June 16, 1946 and enrolled at Central Michigan College on the GI Bill. He graduated in 1950 with a teaching degree. His career as an educator in Pigeon,MI, Ithaca, MI and Manistee spanned 36 years including 27.5 years at Manistee Public Schools where he served as Director of Guidance and high school principal.
Betty Lee and Bob raised seven children: Jon Nathan (Dawn) Lippert of Atlanta, GA, Dency Lippert of Manistee, Jeffry (Elaine) Lippert of St. Louis, MO, Mary (Jim) Hunter of Manistee, Jane (Chris Lane) Lippert of Traverse City, David (J’Aimee) Lippert of Green Bay, WI, and Malcolm (John Byer) Lippert of Jericho, VT. They have 13 grandchildren: Rebecca (Nick) Tsokalas, Jake (Abby) Hunter, Luke (Lindsey) Hunter, Matthew (Sonya) Lippert, Christopher Lippert, Katie Lippert, Rachel Epstein, Aaron Epstein, Hannah Lane, Rachel Lane, Jakob Lippert, Anne Lippert, and Abby Lippert in addition to seven great grandchildren: Alexis Tsokalas, Nicholas Tsokalas, Quinn Hunter, Hadley Hunter, Avery Hunter, Camden Hunter, and Ethan Lippert.
Bob was a member of the Manistee United Methodist Church. Bob and Betty were avid readers, enjoyed spending time with their large extended family, and looked forward to walking on the beach at Gulf Shores, AL for many winters until health problems limited their travel.
A memorial service will be held at Manistee United Methodist Church at 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 1st with visitation from 1:00-2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to USS Hornet Museum (707 West Hornet Avenue, Alameda, CA 94501) Manistee North Pierhead Lighthouse (℅ the Manistee Historical Museum), or First United Methodist Church, Manistee.
