The angels carried Gwendolyn Eileen Pollard, 89, to paradise Friday,
April 1 from Ludington Woods Memory Care Center in Ludington,
Michigan.
The daughter of Flossie Coulson Smith and Roy Weston Smith, Eileen
was born May 4, 1926 in Lansing. Her twin brother, Bud, told her he was
a gentleman and let her be born first, which much to her dismay, made
her the older sibling. After seeing her the first time, her grandfather
Smith said Gwendolyn was much too long a name for such a small baby,
and she was forever known as Eileen.
She married the love of her life, Harvey Hoffman Pollard on April 17,
1945. When he added her to his navy quarters as G. Eileen Pollard, the
secretary asked what the G stood for. After he said he didn’t know, she
said, “Your marriage is never going to last.” They would have celebrated
71 years together in April.
Eileen was an accomplished pianist, entertaining her children with her
ability to play by ear, almost any song they requested. She worked in the
CMU Registrar’s Office for 12 years, and students who attended during
that time fondly remember the woman with the big white hair who got
them through college. After moving to Wilmington, North Carolina in
1976, Eileen was a real estate broker, worked in the cosmetics and
designer clothing department of Belks and volunteered at the Cape Fear
Memorial Hospital.
Her legacy, besides living a life full of love and laughter—and teaching
her children to do the same—was her ability to always look like a
beauty queen from head to toe. As her husband liked to say, they would
run five minutes late for each pass she made by the mirror.
She is survived by her husband and her three children, Dr. Charles
(Janet) Pollard of Ludington, Betsy (Ron) Rau of Lake and Marie (Pam
Gouldsberry) Pollard of Painesvile, Ohio; grandchildren: Jessica (Jason)
Lukenbill, Matthew Pollard, Patrick (Beth) Pollard, Tyler (Emily) Rau,
AnneMarie (Eric) Pomeroy and great-grandchildren, Katie, Tim and
Charlie Pomeroy, Alex and Aubrey Pollard and Gwenna Rose and Larson
Lukenbill. She was preceeded in death by her parents and her brother,
Bud.
Visitation and a funeral mass will be held Friday, April 8, at Sacred Heart
Parish, 302 N. Kinney St., Mt. Pleasant, Michigan with visitation at 10
a.m. and mass at 11 a.m. A private burial service will be held at Richland
Township Cemetery in Vestaburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sacred
Heart Academy Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the church.
