William Schuyler "Skye" Wittig of Kaleva, MI, died unexpectedly and peacefully in his sleep at his home on Monday, July 7, 2025. He was 77 years old.
Born on April 29, 1948, in Manistee, Skye was the son of William and Anne Snyder Wittig. He graduated from Manistee High School in 1966 and attended Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City. In 1968, he joined the U.S. Air Force, serving in Korea and with the Military Police at K.I. Sawyer AFB in Marquette, MI. After his military service, he began a long career with Packaging Corp. of America at its Filer City Mill, from which he retired in 2013 after more than 30 years.
On October 3, 1998, at the age of fifty, Skye married Katherine Chick, the love of his life, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Manistee. Kathy brought two sons and two daughters to the marriage, and Skye embraced his role as a stepfather. He proudly assisted with their parenting, known for his easy-going nature, genuine interest in others, generosity, and his unwavering willingness to spend quality time with them.
Skye had a wide range of passions. He was an avid book reader and loved operating his ham radio, actively participating in the West Michigan Repeater Association under his call sign K8SKY. A true outdoorsman, he enjoyed boating, hunting, and fishing, always finding immense joy and a deep connection to life and humanity in nature.
Skye is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy Wittig. He leaves behind his children: Jennifer Hunter of Kaleva, MI; Andrea Lynch (Tommy) of Fountain, MI; Jeremy Chick (Mary) of Fredericksburg, VA; and Jonathan Chick (Jessica) of Manistee, MI. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren: Jessica Vickers (Jarrod) of Lowell, MI; Wyatt Hunter (Rachel) of Brethren, MI; Diamond Crouse (Tyler) of Fredericksburg, VA; Emerald Chick (Zeke) of Fredericksburg, VA; Marcus Chick of Manistee, MI; Thomas Lynch and Alexander Lynch of Fountain, MI; and Payton Chick of Manistee, MI. His great-grandchildren include Beau and Laurel Vickers, Remi Hunter, and Mariposa Ragen. Additionally, he is survived by his sister, Wendy Wittig Gaines (Andy) of Traverse City, MI; and his niece, Caroline Gaines (Ron Sauer) of Denver, CO. Skye leaves behind numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends who join his family in mourning the loss of a good man and giving thanks for his life.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2025, from 1-3 PM, with Military Honors at 2 PM, at Oak Grove Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Manistee (309 W. Parkdale Ave). Donations in Skye's memory may be made to the West Michigan Repeater Association or the Manistee County Humane Society.
