Shirley Mae Doty, age 98, passed away on May 14, 2025, at her home, Green Acres Assisted Living, in Manistee Michigan. She was born on September 8, 1926, in Oak Park, Illinois, the daughter of Ralph and Mayme (Rush) Redd.
Shirley moved many times in her lifetime. She lived in Maywood, Downers Grove, West Chicago in Illinois; North Royalton, Ohio, and Sparta and Manistee in Michigan.
Shirley graduated with the Downers Grove High School class of 1944. In September of 1944, she attended William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri. Later in life, Shirley earned a degree from Cuyahoga Community College in Parma, Ohio.
On June 16, 1945, Shirley married Norman Doty at the United Methodist Church of Downers Grove. Together they loved and raised three children: Theodore, Dawn, and Dayna. Shirley and Norman celebrated 61 wedding anniversaries together. Norman passed away on March 12, 2007.
Religion, faith, and the Methodist Church were all very important parts of Shirley's life. Her parents were both lifelong Methodist's and so was she. Shirley was an active member of the United Methodist Church in every town she lived in. She taught Sunday School at several of them and was the Church Secretary at the North Royalton United Methodist Church for 19 years. Genealogy was also an important part of her life. She did extensive research on her mother and father's families and also Norman's family.
Shirley is survived by her son Theodore Doty and his wife Richann Doty of Manistee, Michigan and by her daughter Dayna Reimer of Ohio.
She is also survived by 5 grandchildren: Trisha Fires and her partner Jason Reece, Stacy McIntosh and her husband Anthony McIntosh, Sara Cnudde and her husband Michael Cnudde, Jaret and Mitchell Reimer; 7 great grandchildren: Aaron Fires and his wife Deandra Fires, Sierra Fires, Cameron Mueller, Kendall Lucas and her husband Taj Lucas, Pyper and Zayne Earhart, and Devin Loper; 4 great great grandchildren: Oliver and Beckett Fires, and Weston and Bryson Lucas; brother-in-law Howard Doty; sisters-in-law Sandy Redd and Marjorie Doty; former son-in-law Jeffrey Reimer; and numerous nieces, nephews, and their families in Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and Texas. Shirley is also survived by her dear friend Carmen Reeths of Parma, Ohio.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Ralph Redd and Mayme Redd Zinnecker; husband Norman Doty; daughter Dawn Doty; stepfather Garret Zinnecker; brothers Reynolds and Gordon Redd; brother-in-law Kenneth Doty; sisters-in-law Betsy Redd and Roberta Doty; niece Karen Doty; and niece-in-law Chera Doty.
Shirley's family wishes to thank the following professionals for the kindness, compassion, and wonderful care they gave her; Dr. Paul Antal and all of his office staff, Marsha Vanas and all of her staff at Green Acres Assisted Living in Manistee, and all of the nurses and staff of Hospice of Michigan that were there and aided Shirley in her final days.
