Obituary

Regina "Jean" May Burley, age 105 of Bear Lake, passed away on Sunday May 26, 2024, in Pleasanton Township, Michigan.

Born on May 23, 1919, in Grand Junction, Michigan, Jean was the daughter of the late Cecil L. Oxley and Lena May McCurdy. She was a 1937 graduate of Central High School in Flint. Jean went on to attend West Shore Community College where her focus was on art, graduating in 1988. She also attended Western Michigan University majoring in art. Jean completed studies in airline school in Kansas City and completed comptometer certification in Flint.

Jean married Wayne Sherman Burley on October 15, 1942, at their home in Flint. He preceded her in death on February 11, 1997.

She was employed as a Bench Inspector for General Motors in Flint, Bishop Flying Service for Dort Corporation in Flint, and a lab inspector for Sawyer Fruit and Vegetable in Bear Lake.

Jean was a member of the Women of the Arts, the Grand Army of the Republic, Daughters of the American Revolution, Bear Lake Area Historical Society, and the Ohio Genealogical Society. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Bear Lake where she was the former Warder, Treasurer, and Worthy Matron.

She loved to travel with family, traveling all routes of Amtrak USA. through Alaska by car, train, and cruise; spending three weeks in South America, and traveling to all five Hawaiian Islands with husband Wayne. Jean traveled to 19 European countries with her daughters Linda and Joan, touring Germany, Ireland, and Scotland for genealogical research.

Jean was a lifetime supporter of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America.

She is survived by her daughter Linda Jean Burley of Crowne Point, IN and family Sandy Hackett; daughter Joan M. Burley of Las Vegas, NV and family Cameron, Dominick, and Vincent; son Roger Lee Burley of Fairfax, VA and family Dina, Erik and Bryan.

In addition to her parents and husband, Jean was also preceded in death by her brother Lt. Gilbert L. Oxley, and infant Levene Leonard Oxley.

Jean's retirement party will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday June 1, 2024, at Oak Grove Funeral Home in Manistee. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until the time of the party. Entombment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Manistee.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bear Lake Area Historical Society.
