Mary Elizabeth (Johnson) Stewart of Brethren, Michigan passed peacefully in her home after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer on Monday November 29, 2021.
Mary was born in Detroit, Michigan on December 6, 1947. She was the fourth oldest of nine children born to James Theodore and Winifred Mabel (Underwood) Johnson.
Mary attended Cherry Hill High school in Inkster, Michigan with the class 1966. Then to Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan where in 1970 she received her Bachelor of Science and in 1979 her Master of Education. Mary loved teaching elementary children; first in Atlanta, Michigan, Wayne-Westland Schools, then in Kaleva Norman Dixon Schools, where she retired in 2010.
Mary was very active in the Methodist Church in Brethren, Michigan where they loved her apple pie and stuffed pepper soup. She liked to travel and spend time with family and friends.
She enjoyed water aerobics with friends in Manistee, still life painting, and playing board games with family and friends. She would help anyone anytime. She would never speak ill of anyone, she was the nicest person you could ever meet. Loving wife to Don for almost thirty-nine years.
Left to cherish her memory are stepdaughters Linda (Dave) Miller, Nancy (Terry) Randall, and Peggy Pierce; nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; sisters Winifred (Gary) Macy, Carol Piekarz, Virginia Johnson, and Peggy Primm; and countless nieces, nephews and friends.
Her passing was preceded by husband Donald Stewart; stepdaughter Susan Jenson; her parents; brothers David Johnson, Michael Johnson, and Carl Johnson; sister Phyllis Michaud; two brothers-in-law Tom Piekarz and Dennis Primm; and nephew Jeremy Johnson.
A celebration of Mary's life will be held on Saturday December 4, 2021, at 1:00 P.M. at Epworth United Methodist Church, 3939 N. Highbridge Road, Brethren, Michigan 49619. A luncheon will follow the service.
