LaVerne Caroline Kirchenberg, age 97, of Manistee, Michigan, was called to her heavenly
home on November 6, 2023, at Maple Ridge Manor in Manistee.
She was born on January 9, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Julius and Helen
(Hugel) Stelter. She graduated from Kelvin Park High School in 1943. On October 20, 1946,
she married Marvin W. Kirchenberg at Bethel Ev. Lutheran Church in Chicago. He preceded her
in death on April 4, 2005. LaVerne was employed as a bookkeeper for the Chicago Convention
and Tourism Bureau.
In addition to the love and joy she shared in raising her family, her love of the Lord led her
to worship regularly and to serve her dear Church. In her first 70 years, she taught Sunday
School and VBS, sang in the choir, was a member of Walther League and ladies bowling league,
assisted with bookkeeping, and used her sewing skills to make curtains for the classrooms in the
Lutheran school.
After living in Chicago for 79 years, LaVerne moved to Manistee for her remaining years.
She was blessed with welcoming friends and neighbors, especially at her new church home,
Trinity Lutheran. At Trinity, she served through her quilting, knitting and baking.
LaVerne is survived by her son Mark (Dale) Kirchenberg; grandson Jonathan Kirchenberg
and great-granddaughter Chloe; and granddaughter Beth Kirchenberg. She is also survived by
her dear brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ralph & Christine Kirchenberg; niece Lynn (Jon)
Chate, and nephews Eric (Alexa) Kirchenberg and Ralph Taylor.
Also preceding her in death were her brother-in-law and sister, Scot & Ruth Taylor; her
brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Henry & Lillian Werner; and nephew Delmar Werner.
A funeral service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 420 Oak, in Manistee, on
November 17, at 1:00 PM. The family will receive friends at church from noon until the time of
the service. A luncheon will follow in the parish hall.
