Josephine Irene “Josie” Durkatz, age 72 of Filer City, Michigan died Saturday, June 6, 2026 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.

She was born on June 12, 1953 in Hamtramck, MI the daughter of late George & Irene (Bobinski) Durkatz. She was a 1972 graduate of Hamtramck High School.

In her early years Josie was employed by Lakeshore Enterprises in Manistee cleaning various locations in the greater Manistee Area. In later years she worked alongside her partner of 37 years Rio Garcia. She was a member of the Civic Club and VFW.

Josie loved all animals. She saved and helped many homeless & needy cats, birds, & squirrels. She loved to garden and grew out of a raised bed garden. She picked all types of berries, spending many mornings outside. Inside, she loved to crochet while she watched TV. Josie also contributed to recycling for over 35 years. She loved to watch beach sunsets.

She is survived by her partner Rio Garcia. Together they watched over each. Josie’s presence and care was greatly appreciated and cherished. Also surviving are her sons Billy & Richard, her twin brother; Joseph Durkatz, brother; George Durkatz, and her sister Jane Angels as well as by various nieces and nephews, many friends, and loved ones.

She was also preceded in death by a brother; Kenneth Durkatz.

A Celebration of Josie’s Life will be held Saturday July 11, 2026 at the VFW Post #4499 in Manistee from 12 Noon to 3:00 P.M.
