John Howard (Jack) Fischer, age 93 of Onekama, MI died Friday evening September 12, 2025 at his home.

He was born in Chicago, IL on August 26, 1932, the son of Roy A. and Elizabeth (Knickerbocker) Fischer. He graduated from Knox College in Galesburg, IL. He was a veteran of the United States Army. On June 12,1954 he married Joyce McGrew at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Galesburg. They honeymooned on Portage Lake, returning each summer thereafter with their growing family. Jack and Joyce realized their dream of acquiring a house on Portage Lake in 1981, with the home becoming a year-round gathering place for family. They raised their children in Galesburg and upon Jack's retirement in 1990, following a thirty-year career as owner of the McGrew & McGrew Independent Insurance Agency, they relocated permanently to Onekama. Joyce preceded him in death on December 10, 2021.

Jack enjoyed sailing, tennis, golf, swimming in the waves of Lake Michigan, model railroading, woodworking, reading on the beach, and exploring northern Michigan. He also was a sports lover, especially football. He was a lifelong fan of the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bears and attended their first Super Bowl. He closely followed high school football and was a regular at Portager games.

Above all Jack and Joyce cherished time surrounded by their large family. Surviving are his children; Katherine E. Fischer (Michael Bretting), John F. (Jeni Berndt) Fischer, James H. Fischer, Cheryl A. (Mark) McMullin, and Roy S. Fischer; nine grandchildren and 13 great- grandchildren.

Jack was also preceded in death by his daughter-in-law Karen (Roy), in April 2025.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, October 3, 2025 at 11:00 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Onekama.
