Obituary

John Richard Berryman, age 89, of Arcadia, Michigan, passed away peacefully on May 27,
2025. Born on July 21, 1935 to Benton and Sylvia (née Raynaud) Berryman, in Wyandotte,
Michigan, John lived a full and remarkable life as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great
grandfather, educator, and friend.

John is survived by his loving wife Marolyn Berryman (née Manke), his sister Carole Berryman
Hokkanen, and by his daughters: Ann Berryman Smith, Sally Berryman, and Nancy Berryman
Masterson (husband Glen Masterson). He is also survived by his grandchildren: Casey Smith
(partner Amanda Pelchat), Kelly Smith (wife Kaitlyn Smith), Keegan Smith (wife Katy Smith),
Thor Cramer Bornemann (partner Eleanor Webb), Nico Cramer Bornemann, Emily Masterson,
and Austin Masterson (wife Alyssa Masterson); and his great-granddaughter, Adeline Smith.

John's surviving stepchildren include Beth Altergott (husband Jeffrey Altergott) and Bernard
Howard (wife Tina Howard); and step-grandchildren: Morgan Altergott, Taylor Nate (husband
Thomas Nate), Brittany Rangel (partner Rebekah Hartman), Heather O'Connor (husband
Robert O'Connor), and Gabrielle Howard. He is also survived by his step-great-grandchildren
Lennox Rangel and Huxley O'Connor.

John was preceded in death by his first wife, Miriam "Mickey" Berryman (née Leimer), who
passed away in 1997. He was also preceded by his sisters Mary Berryman Rouse and Joan
Berryman Varady.

A proud graduate of Western Michigan College, John was a gifted athlete who played both
baseball and football at the collegiate level. He helped lead his baseball team to the College
World Series and earned Most Valuable Player honors in football. Following his time as a
student-athlete, he continued his academic pursuits, earning both master's and doctoral
degrees in education.

John devoted his professional life to teaching and administration. He served as a teacher and
coach before becoming the principal of Rich Central High School in Olympia Fields, Illinois. He
concluded his distinguished career as Assistant Superintendent of Rich Township High Schools
in Park Forest, Illinois. In his retirement, he served his community as a member of the Frankfort
Michigan Rotary Club and the Arcadia Michigan Lions Club.

John will be remembered for his dedication to his family and his deep love for sports, especially
the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions, and Chicago White Sox. His family treasures memories of his
magic quarter tricks, Yogi Berra-style wit, and his playful renditions of "Heart and Soul" on the
piano. His family also has fond memories of fishing trips, pancake breakfasts, golfing at
Chestnut Hills and diving for golf balls. His sharp "eagle-eye" and humor were hallmarks of his
personality.

He enjoyed the simple pleasures of life—Diet Coke from a gold can, a Whopper Jr. hamburger,
sunny winters in Arizona, and summers spent walking the beach with hands in pockets near his
cherished home on Lake Michigan in Arcadia.

John Berryman was a man of integrity, wisdom, and warmth who touched many lives. He will be
deeply missed and forever remembered by those who knew and loved him.

May he rest in peace.
