NELSON, Herbert Eugene, "Herb", age 98, formerly of Lake Leelanau, MI passed away Friday, November 8, 2019. He was a graduate of Leland High School, and received degrees from the Louis Schafen School of Business, Traverse City Michigan, and The Walsh College of Accounting in Detroit Michigan. Herb was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Leland, MI. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, and was married to the former Marthabel Stewart of Beulah and Leland, MI in 1944 at Northville, MI. The couple had three children, Nancy Lee, Stuart Allan, and Travis Andrew. Herb served honorably in the Army Air Force during World War II and was with the 8th Air Force on Okinawa where he served as a remote turret technician. Herb was employed by Fuel Oil Corporation in accounting, sales of Heavy Oil, and as the Marine Superintendent for company ships on the Great Lakes. During this time period he was active in the Propeller Club, Port of Detroit, serving on the Board of Governors. While living in Livonia, MI, Herb sat as a member of the Livonia School Board Advisory Committee and then served as a member of the board until leaving it to devote time to his own business, Nelson's Livonia Picture Framing and Art Supply Co. The wholesale portion of this business was later moved to Traverse City, MI and is now owned by his son Travis Nelson. Herb was preceded in death by his parents Pete and Nellie Nelson, wife Marthabel, daughter Nancy Marble, granddaughter Megan Marble, brother Orlean and Sister Jane. He is survived by his sister May Purvis of Traverse City MI, son Stuart Nelson of Bethesda, MD, son Travis Nelson of Cedar, MI, 5 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be planned for the spring when Herb's family can gather together in Leland, MI.
