Obituary

Gary Clyde Bentley, age 82, of Manistee, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home on July 2, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on March 2, 1944, in Marlette, Michigan, Gary was the son of the late Clyde and Mae Bentley. He grew up with strong family values, a love for the outdoors, and a deep appreciation for hard work—qualities that shaped the life he lived and the legacy he leaves behind.

Gary graduated from Lapeer High School in 1962 and continued his education at Central Michigan University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1968. That same year, on August 10, he married the love of his life, Mary Jean Ackley, at Immaculate Conception Church in Lapeer. Gary was service‑oriented, contributing his time and talents to various committees and boards in both Michigan and Florida.

A dedicated educator, Gary spent 28 years with Manistee Public Schools, where he influenced countless students with his steady guidance, patience, and commitment to learning. He retired in June 1996, leaving behind a career marked by integrity and service.

Outside the classroom, Gary embraced the outdoors and the simple joys of life. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, camper, and farmer, and he found great fulfillment in spending time on the land he loved. He also enjoyed friendly competition through euchre, cribbage, and playing bocce, sharing laughter and connection with family and friends. His warm humor, steady presence, and generous spirit made him a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

Gary is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Jean Bentley of Manistee; his children, Paul and Jessica Bentley of Marquette, Anne Bentley of Manistee, and Patrick and Jennifer Bentley of Bear Lake; and his cherished grandchildren, Hunter and Sydney Bentley, also of Bear Lake. He is further survived by his brothers, Stan (Ruth) Bentley of North Branch and Reg (Kathy) Bentley of Drummond Island, along with many extended family members and friends. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Mae Bentley, whose memory he carried with him throughout his life.

A visitation will be held at Oak Grove Funeral Home in Manistee on Friday, July 10, 2026, beginning at 9:00 AM, followed by a short service at 10:00 AM. A meal will be provided afterward. Father James Bearss will officiate.

A formal funeral service will take place on Monday, July 13, 2026, at Saint Isidore Catholic Church in Laingsburg, beginning at 11:00 AM. Father Anthony Brooks will officiate. Immediately following the service, Gary will be laid to rest at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Laingsburg.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the charity of your choice, honoring Gary’s lifelong spirit of generosity and service.
