Gary Lee Anderson, age 76, of Manistee, Michigan, passed away peacefully on September 28th at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.

Gary was a loving husband, father, stepfather, and Papa whose greatest legacy will not be found in titles or accomplishments, but in the love, memories, and lasting impact he leaves with his family.

Gary shared his life with his beloved wife, Jean and together they built a family filled with love. He was a proud father to his daughter, Melissa (Joe) Governale, and a cherished stepfather to Nathan (Mikhayla) Hogan, Nicholas (Tess) Hogan, and Casey (Aubrey) Hogan.

Although they were his stepsons, Gary never treated them as anything less than his own. He was there as a father, a role model, and someone they could count on. The bond they shared was built over years of family, laughter, conversations, and memories that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Being a stepfather was not simply a title to Gary—it was a part of who he was.

His grandchildren, Vincent, Fisher, Opal, Bennett, Bentley, Henry, and Cason, held a very special place in his heart. Gary took great pride in being their Papa, and the memories they made with him will be treasured forever. To them, he was not just Papa, but someone whose presence, love, and stories will continue to be a part of their lives even though he is no longer here.

Gary proudly served his country for six years in the United States Navy.

He had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and loved spending his time hunting, fishing, and enjoying nature. He also had a lifelong love for his Detroit Lions, and Sundays spent watching the Lions were something Gary truly enjoyed. Whether celebrating a big play, enduring a tough loss, or simply sitting back and watching his team, being a Lions fan was one of the many things that brought him joy.

Gary leaves behind a family who loved him deeply and who will feel his absence in countless ways. His family will carry forward the lessons he taught them, the stories they shared, and the memories that will become even more precious with time.

He may no longer be sitting around the table, heading out into the woods, casting a line, watching the Lions on Sunday, or spending time with his grandchildren, but the love he gave his family will remain.

At Gary’s request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. His family will honor his wishes and remember him privately, cherishing the many years and memories they were fortunate enough to share with him.

Gary was a husband, a father, a stepfather, a Papa, a Navy veteran, and a friend. Above all, he was family—and he will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and never forgotten.

Rest peacefully, Gary. Your time here may be over, but the love you gave and the memories you left behind will live on in all of us. And when the Lions take the field on Sunday, we’ll think of you.
