Elizabeth "Bette" Bishop, 82, of Filer City Mi. was called home on Easter Sunday, April 20th, 2025, peacefully at home after a long battle with Lung Cancer.
Bette was born Elizabeth Kathryne Sommerfeldt on Tuesday November 24th, 1942, at home in Manistee. Bette was the first of two daughters to bless Dorothy Louise Ringel and Leo Oscar Sommerfeldt who precede her in death.
She was a member and attended Trinity Lutheran Church/school before transferring to the Manistee Public Schools graduating in 1960.
Bette married Michael Scott "Scotty" Bishop on April 2nd, 1966, in Manistee and he preceded her in death in January of 2018. Together they raised 4 children, Kristen Bishop of Kalamazoo, Kelly and Randy Emmons of Filer City, Keith Bishop of Manistee who preceded her in death March 2014, and Kevin and Kimberly Bishop of Oxford N.C.
She was very proud of her 7 grandsons and 1 bonus granddaughter. Kristen's son Jarrod Bishop, Kelly and Randy 's sons and daughter Brandon Jablonski, Logan Jablonski, Ryan Jablonski and Alysa Nichole Emmons. Kevin and Kimberly's sons Tyler Bishop, Gage Bishop and Hunter Bishop. These grandchildren blessed her with 6 great grandchildren that she adored. Brandon gave her Adaliena Nevaeh 12 and Jaxxon Jace 8, Ryan and Sydney Rae gave her Owen Ryan 9, Alivia Skye 8 and Heath Michael due in August, and Alysa and Michael gave her Axton Duane 2.
She is survived by her sister Ruth Nyberg of Cadillac, sister-in-law Rebecca Skocelas of Manistee, numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and very special friends. Nash, her beloved rescue companion, misses her tremendously.
Bette worked as a secretary her entire working years. She worked for box board, now known as Packaging Corporation of America as a switchboard operator/secretary. She worked for Krolczyk and Danielson Attorneys at Law and served the county for over a quarter of a century as the Administrative Assistant to the Prosecutor.
Bette LOVED to read. The rate this beautiful soul could read a book made her daughter's head spin. She shared her books with many, especially her sister-in-law Becky. She also crocheted, creating so many beautiful crafts as small as white Snowflakes to as big as Afghans.
She was not only preceded in death by her parents, husband and son but also her mother and father-in-law Sam and Irene Bishop, her sister and brother-in-law Julyda "Julie" and Troy Metcalf, and brother-in-law Anthony "Tony/Sonny" Skocelas.
Bette requested that NO funeral take place. She only wanted cremation and a celebration of her life to take place. She even jokingly stated "If anyone offers to be my pallbearers create a zipper line and pass me from one person to the next until I reach my place at the celebration." The details will be in the first comment below.
I'd like to publically thank my husband Randy for selflessly staying with my mom since her fall in January so she could stay in her own home, as she wanted, until she was called home. THANK YOU.
To Dr. Kristian Kohler and the staff at the Manistee Cancer and Infusion Center for lovingly caring for mom for so many years and knowing that fine line between quality and quantity of life. THANK YOU (ring ring goes the bell mom you are cancer free).
And to the team from Hospice of Michigan that treated mom with so much respect and dignity during their care of her mind, body and Spirit, especially Christina who came three different times on Easter. THANK YOU.
Oak Grove Funeral Home & Cremation Center is in charge of moms wishes.
Fly high beautiful hummingbird.
