Obituary

Edward (Ed) A. Haik, Jr., age 73, of Manistee, Michigan died on January 11, 2022, at "The Ponderosa," his home, in the arms of his loving wife, Louise.

Ed was born in Grand Rapids on April 7, 1948, the son of the late Edward Haik, Sr. and Patricia Ann (Bunn) Street. Ed was a Lance Corporal Marine who served in Vietnam in the 1st Battalion Platoon 1008 from 1967 to 1969.

Ed married Louise E. Derby on April 17, 1971, in Bear Lake at the Bear Lake Methodist Church. Ed joined the Manistee County Sheriff's Department as a Marine Deputy in 1970. He served as a Deputy Sheriff, and Lieutenant until he was elected Sheriff in 1984. He was Sheriff of Manistee County until 2000, when he retired after 30 years of service. When asked by his daughter why he loved his job, he smiled and said, "Because I love catching bad guys and serving the people of Manistee County."

In 1998, he was awarded the VFW 4499 Outstanding Citizen of Manistee County. He was an ardent supporter of the Coast Guard and testified before Congress to successfully lobby for their presence on the Great Lakes. Ed served as a Manistee County Commissioner in his retirement where he was instrumental in rebuilding the road patrol for the Sheriff's Department. He spent countless hours building opportunities for Manistee youth, including the Teen Center, Junior Football and Youth Baseball.

Ed was a lifetime member of the VFW, a member of the Elks club and the Big Bear Sportsman. There were many seasons in Ed's life: Deer season, trout season, rabbit season, ice fishing season, and more. He was an avid outdoorsman who could be found enjoying hunting and fishing year-round from Alaska to the Carolinas with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Louise, daughter, son, daughter-in-law and son-in-law; Kristi Haik and Steve Durst of Big Rapids, MI, and Sean & Emily Haik of Fort Mill, SC, five grandchildren; James (Bree) Creguer, Thomas (Rachel) Durst, Savannah, Hudson, and Grant Haik, five great grandchildren; Hannah and Emily Durst, and Gabriel (Vanessa) Gomez, Lucas and Alexia Gomez, brothers and sister; Emery (Lee), Brett (Mitzi), and Brian Haik and Patricia (David) Way, and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Ed is preceded in death by his brother Eric Haik, sister Pearl Haik, mother Patricia (Bunn) Street, step father Arthur Street, and mother-in-law and father-in-law Doris and Elmer "Jack" Derby.
