Daniel Scott
Willey
Aug 6, 1966 — Jul 25, 2026
Traverse City, Michigan
Daniel Scott Willey, known to those who loved him as "Scott," passed away peacefully on July 25, 2026, at the age of 59, after a year-long struggle with complications following a stroke.
Born on August 6, 1966, in Ludington, Michigan, Scott was raised in Mason County by his mother, Rosanne, and her husband, James Rees, whom Scott proudly considered his father. He graduated from Ludington High School before setting out on a path to serve his country. Scott proudly enlisted in the U.S. Army as a Combat Medical Specialist, where he attained the rank of Private Second Class. During his service, he was awarded the Army Service Ribbon and earned Expert Marksmanship Qualification Badges with Rifle (M16) and Hand Grenade. Following his honorable discharge, he settled in Virginia, where he spent more than 20 years serving his community with fresh treats and warm smiles from behind the bakery counter at a local grocery store. Upon retiring, Scott chose to return home to Michigan to enjoy his retirement surrounded by family.
Scott treasured the peace and quiet of home with his beloved cat, Max. He enjoyed reading, watching anime, and listening to music. Although he preferred a quiet life, Scott possessed an inquisitive mind and a sharp intellect. He appreciated deep, meaningful conversations and cherished the time he spent with his close circle of friends and family. His kindness, wisdom, and gentle spirit left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Scott had an extraordinarily tender heart and experienced both the joys and sorrows of life deeply. He never stopped missing the parents and siblings who passed before him, and those who loved him find comfort in knowing he is reunited with them once again.
Scott was preceded in death by his mother, Rosanne Marie Rees (Burnette); his stepfather, James Ernest Rees Jr.; his brother, Stacy Allen Willey; his sister, Melissa Marie Rees-Herington; and his aunt, Barbara Martin.
He is survived by his aunts, Christine Taylor and Jo Mancine; his step-siblings, Robbin, Regan, Royce, and Kathy; his nieces and nephews, Calista, Michael, Jeremy, Shelby, Christian, Dixie, Katlin, Phoenix, Sky, Robert, Nickole, Thomas, and Bobby Jo; his many great-nieces and great-nephews; and his cherished friends, Joel, Bill, and Vera.
In accordance with Scott's wishes, a private celebration of life will be held at a later date. He will be laid to rest at Cherry Valley Township Cemetery alongside his brother and sister. The family appreciates the love and support shown during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Scott's name to Oak Grove Funeral Home & Cremation Center of Manistee, Michigan, to help offset the costs of his final arrangements.
