Bruce Allen, 66, of Manistee, Michigan, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on November 1, 2025 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, Michigan. A man of quiet strength, kindness, and unwavering integrity, Bruce lived his life guided by service, humility, and love for his family and community.
Born on September 17, 1959 in Niles, Michigan, Bruce was the cherished son of J. Chester Allen, Jr., former judge in South Bend, and Patricia (Edson) Allen. Bruce was the beloved grandson of attorneys and civil rights
advocates J. Chester Allen, Sr. and Elizabeth Fletcher Allen, whose lifelong commitment to justice and equality shaped his values and sense of purpose. A graduate of Clay High School in South Bend, Bruce went on to earn his Master of Public Administration from Indiana University in 1984. His professional life reflected his deep belief in public good. He was a Senior Vice President at Westat, an employee-owned social science research company in Rockville, Maryland, where he was admired for his integrity, management prowess and quiet leadership.
After retiring and moving to Manistee, Bruce's principles found new expression in his civic involvement. He served as a member of the Downtown Development Authority (DDA), the Manistee Area Racial Justice and Diversity Initiative (MARJDI), and 100 Men Who Care - each reflecting his steady commitment to inclusion, equity, and community growth
Music was a lifelong joy for Bruce. He played drums in several rock bands over the years and, true to his spirit of curiosity and growth, had recently taken up the electric bass. He was also an avid sports enthusiast, with a special passion for World Cup soccer, NFL Football, NBA basketball and his hometown favorite Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.
Above all, Bruce was a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend. He is survived by his loving wife, Lisa (Jaquez) Allen, and cherished daughter, Georgia Belen Allen, both of Manistee; sister Eleanor Allen of Somerset, Massachusetts, and her children Cole Flewelling-Allen and Terrence Flewelling-Allen; and his aunt and uncle Dr. Irving Allen and Betty Allen of Brookline, Massachusetts, and their children Donia Allen of Brookline and David Allen (and his wife Maura Allen) of Washington, D.C.
Those who knew Bruce will remember his kind heartedness, steady presence, and deep compassion for others. He lived quietly but left an unmistakable mark - through every kindness extended, every rhythm played, and every act of justice pursued.
A celebration of Bruce's life will be held at a later date in Manistee. To honor Bruce, the family asks donations bemade to the MCCF-MARJDI Fund online at ManisteeFoundation.org
