Obituary for Harry Arthur Smalley

Harry Arthur Smalley
Harry A. Smalley, age 88, of Free Soil, passed away on Monday, August 6, 2018 at
Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, following a long and courageous battle with
cancer.

Harry was born on September 24, 1929 in Branch, the son of the late Floyd E. and Dora
M. (Johnston) Smalley. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army from the Korean War, being
stationed in Germany.

Harry married the love of his life, Elizabeth J. Bennett, on June 25,1954 and they
celebrated 64 years together.. He worked for-Martin Marietta for 35 vears, retiring in,
1991. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Manistee.

Harry enjoyed fishing (often sharing any little extra bits of fish with his favorite pet
snapping turtle), hunting, swimming, hiking many types of trails, puttering in the garage
and woodworking projects. He and Elizabeth also loved traveling to various places in
the United States, always looking forward to that next adventure. Harry dearly loved
spending time with his family and grandchildren, with much laughter and memories now
to cherish. ln the later years, sometimes at the end of a day of work or play family
would gather together on the porch and share a little happy hour and good
conversation.

Harry is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth Smalley, daughters, Linda (Tony) Papes,
Gail (Curt) Luomala, and Jennifer Larson; seven grandchildren, Sarah (Joe) Hendges,
Kevin (Heather) Papes, Kimberly (Steve) Papes-Opalka, Lance Luomala, Craig
Luomala, Joshua Larson, and Dustin Larson; three great grandchildren, Alivia, Adeline
and Paxton, sister; Grace (James) Yeager, sister-in-law, Emily Smalley and
brother, James Smalley, niece; Beth Maki and nephews, James Maki and John
Bennett.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four brothers and three sister-in-laws, Curtis Smalley, Glen (Patricia) Smalley, Stanley (Elverna) Smalley, Ralph Smalley and Margaret Maki. Also two sisters, Edith Smalley and Ellen Smalley.

Harry worked very hard to take care of his family. He was deeply loved by his family
and will be greatly missed.

Per Harry's wishes cremation has taken place and a private family gathering in
celebration of Harry's life will take place at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

The family has entrusted arrangements to Oak Grove Funeral Home and Cremation
Center in Manistee. Share a memory at www.oakgrovefh.com.
